يحمل هذا الكتاب في طياته تجديدات متعددة : نظرية ومنهجية، وفي مصادر المعرفة ومراجعها، وتنفض الدراسة الغبار عن حقبة تأسيسية في تاريخ الفلسطينيين الذين بقوا في حيفا والجليل بعد النكبة (1948-1956). وتسمح هذه الدراسة بسرد حكايات إنسانية وشخصية للمهمشين، مغايرة للروايات التاريخية النخبوية. فأسباب وحيثيات البقاء في فلسطين بعد سنة 1948 ظلت ضبابية قلم سلط المؤرخون الأضواء عليها. وهذه الدراسة تسلط الأضواء على بعض حالات \"عدم الطرد\" من الناصرة وأغلبية قرى ناحيتها، والقرى الدرزية وغيرها. ويشمل البحث حكايات من لم يطردوا، وآخرين اقتلعوا ثم عادوا إلى وطنهم. ويوثق لصراع البقاء وحيثياته منذ النكبة حتى حرب السويس ومذبحة كفر قاسم اعتمادا على منشورات ومخطوطات قلما عاينها الباحثون. وفي سبيل إسماع صوت المهمشين في شمال فلسطين حينذاك لا يهمل البحث الوثيقة الشفوية من خلال مقابلات أجريت مع من عايشوا الأحداث وكانوا شهود عيان عليها.
