تناول هذا الكتاب رصد لبعض الظواهر الأدبية في العصر الإسلامي بقسميه صدر الإسلام وعصر بني أمية من خلال الاستعانة بالجهود التي حملها لنا القدماء والمحدثون والوقوف في ذلك الصدد، على توضيح أطوار الأدب في عصر صدر الإسلام والمؤثرات الفاعلة في هذه المرحلة وأبرز الشعراء الإسلاميين فيها كحسان بن ثابت والشعراء الذين يلتحقون ببعض أردية الجاهلية كالحطيئة، مع تقديم بعض من شعر الرثاء لأبى ذؤيب الهذلي ومعالجة حديثة لقضايا تراثية خالدة حول النثر الفني. وتحدث أيضا عن الأدب العربى فى عصر بنى امية وروابط الشعر بالبيئة فى الحجاز والعراق والشام والحديث عن النثر في الخطابة والكتابة مختتما بالكلام عن عبد الحميد بن يحيى والكتابة الفنية.
