تعالج الكاتبة في هذه الرواية قضيتي الهجرة والهوية وذلك من خلال قصة شاب من أصول عربية يهاجر إلى جنوب أفريقيا ويقع في غرام فتاة جنوب أفريقية يجد فيها خلاصا لوضعه غير القانوني كمهاجر غير شرعي، في حين تجد هي فيه تعبيرا عن رفضها لبيئتها البورجوازية التي أفرزتها مرحلة ما بعد انتهاء نظام التمييز العنصري في بلدها وسرعان ما تتكشف لدى سفر الفتاة إلى بلد حبيبها-الذي أصبح زوجها-وذلك بعد رفض منحه إقامة في جنوب أفريقيا مواجهة بين نمطين من العيش وهناك تبدأ رحلته في البحث عن بلد هجرة آخر، في حين تبدأ هي رحلتها في اكتشاف ذاتها من خلال قرية زوجها العربية المسلمة وعائلته ولاسيما الصحراء التي تغدو ملاذها الوحيد وسط عاصفة من الأسئلة لدى كل من الاثنين عن الحب والوطن والانتماء والهوية والتي تنتهي نهاية غير متوقعة.
