يعد هذا الكتاب من أهم كتب القواعد الفقهية على المذهب الشافعي، حيث جمع المصنف فيه بين القواعد الفقهية وبين الفروع والمسائل الجزئية وقد أمضى المؤلف فيه زمنا طويلا في جمع مادته واعتمد عليه ابن نجيم الحنفي وقد رتبه مصنفه على سبعة كتب : الكتاب الأول في شرح القواعد الخمس التي يرجع إليها جميع مسائل الفقه والثاني في القواعد الكلية والثالث في القواعد المختلف فيها (وهي عشرون قاعدة) والرابع في أحكام يكثر دورها ويقبح على الفقيه جهلها كأحكام الناسي والجاهل والخامس في نظائر الأبواب (وهو مرتب على الأبواب الفقهية) والسادس في ما افترقت فيه أبواب فقهية والسابع في نظائر شتى فهو كتاب ينمي الملكة الفقهية عند الفقيه ويزكي عقلية الجمع والتفريق.
