يتناول المؤلف (غضنفر باشاييف) في هذا الكتاب صور توثيقية عن تاريخ هذا المكان، عبر رحلات المؤلف في الكثير من مدن العراقية. وتعرفه على أنماط معيشتها ومظاهر حياتها وثقافاتها وعلاقاتها وتنوعها الاجتماعي والقومي والديني، فضلا عن كشوفاته التي تعبر عن ثقافته الواسعة وعن رغبته في معرفة العديد من صور التاريخ العراقي القديم والحديث ومدنة المعروفة. عاش الكاتب ست سنوات في العراق بصورة متقطعة بدأت من العام 1962 وحتى العام 1975 وتجول في بغداد من الجنوب إلى الشمال وتعرف على عادات وتقاليد شعب عريق له حضارة.
