\"توماس\" و\"جاسبار\" صديقان حميمان يافعان لا يفترقان، الاثنان في سن الحادية عشر من عمرهما ويدرسان معا في القسم السادس بإحدى المدارس الإعدادية بباريس واختارا لقضاء عطلتهما الصيفية برنامجا لا يخلو من طرافة يتعرفا من خلاله على النباتات، ويمارسا لعبة كرة القدم و\"توماس\" وجد في البرنامج مصدر سعادة لا توصف، إذ سيتسنى له أن يتعرف على النباتات مزاولا بذلك نشاطه الأثير وهوايته المفضلة وغير أن الولدين ما إن وصلا إلى مكان قضاء العطلة بإحدى القرى الواقعة جنوب فرنسا حتى وجدا أن حريقا اندلع فدمر جزءا من قصر السيد \"دي بيريهوراد\" وهو المكان المخصص لإقامتهما، وقد جعلت هذه الحادثة سكان القصر يتصرفون بغرابة.
