يتحدث الكتاب \"حول\" الفاشية وليس عنها، فقد احتوى معظم الكتاب على أحداث وأسئلة تتحدث عن أنواع الفاشية وتقارنها بالنازية ويناقش الكتاب الفرق بين الفاشية كحركة والفاشية كسلطة، فكان استلام موسوليني السلطة في شهر أكتوبر عام 1922 ثمرة تسوية بين الفاشية والقيادات التقليدية وكانت سمات الائتلاف لنظام سياسي يقوده موسوليني بارزة المعالم حتى نهاية عام 1925 وثبتت هذه المساومة النظام وقوته في السنوات الأولى قبل 1925، فعندما قررت طبقة القيادات التقليدية مساندة موسوليني ودعمه من أجل إبعاد الخطر، كان على الفاشية، بالنسبة إلى طبقة الكوادر التقليدية ومن خلال التجربة، أن تتجدد في أساليبها التنظيمية وتبلور مثل هذا الأمر في المرحلة الأولى لحكومة موسوليني. حيث دبت معارضة بين المتشددين والمعتدلين وقد خلق هذا صعوبات عدة لموسوليني. لكن هذا الأمر انتهى بإنقاذه سياسيا من خلال تفجر الأزمة الكبيرة بين ماتيوتي وجماعة التشدد القديم.
