جون ستیوارت میل ھو فیلسوف واقتصادي بریطاني، ولد في لندن عام 1806 م، و كان البكر لأسرة كبیرة أنجبت تسعة أولاد، و كان والده جیمس میل أحد كبار أھل العلم والمعرفة في القرن الثامن عشر عاش بعیدا عن تأثیر التیارات الرومانتیكیة الجدیدة، وترك فیھ بنثام والمادیون الفلاسفة الفرنسیون أثرا كبیرا وقد أنشأ بنھ جون ستیوارت في عزلة عن بقیة الأطفال، فنال تربیة عقلانیة. تعلم جون الإغریقیة في السنة الخامسة من عمره، حیث اطلع على أعمال ھیرودوت و أفلاطون، وتعلم اللاتینیة في التاسعة، وفي الثانیة عشرة درس أرسطو ومنطق ھوبز وفي الثالثة عشرة قرأ مبادئ ریكاردو كان غذاؤه الفكري موجھا بعنایة من قبل أبیھا وخلیطا من العلم الطبیعي والآداب الكلاسیكیة وحین بلغ جون الرابعة عشرة، كان لھ من المعرفة والاطلاع ما كان لرجل في الثلاثین. لقد نجح والده في أن یجعل منھ كائنا عقلانیا مزودا بمعلومات واسعة.
