يتألف الكتاب من مقدمة وتمهيد وثلاثة فصول وخاتمة، أهتم التمهيد بالحركة الإسلامية في العراق، موضحا طبيعتها قبل تأسيس حزب الدعوة الإسلامية، ثم تناول قيام حزب الدعوة الإسلامية منذ عام 1957 إلى أن تعرض التنظيم لأشد ضربة من حكومة البعث عام 1971 شتت خطوطه وكشفت جزءاً منها للسلطة وبعدها سلط الضوء على فكر الدعوة الإسلامية وثقافتها، والأسس التي قام عليها التنظيم.
