هذا الكتاب- كما يدل عليه اسمه- موسوعة تاريخية شاملة موجزة للحضارة الإنسانية عبر عصورها ويروى قصتها الأديب الإنجليزى الشهير \"ج.هـ ويلز\". والطبعة العربية من هذا الكتاب تصدر أربعة أجزاء يتناول الجزء الأول منها نشأة الكون والنظرية العلمية المختلفة التي تفسر تطوره ثم ظهور الإنسان والأجناس القديمة المندثرة ويعرض لفكر الإنسان البدائي ومعتقداته الدينية ونشأة اللغة وتقسياتها قم لأقدم الحضارات في مصر والعراق والهند. أما الجزء الثاني فيعرض للحضارة الإغريقية والهلينستية والرومانية ولمحة عن تاريخ العبرانيين، أما الجزء الثالث فيعنى بحضارات العصر الوسيط والجزء الرابع يتناول التاريخ الحديث.
