هذه الرواية كلفت كاتبها ثمنا غاليا إذا انطلقنا من حقيقة باتت معروفة ؛ وهي أنها تتحدث عن طفولة الكاتب، فصارت من أبرز كتب الناشئة التي ازدادت شعبيتها بفعل تكريسها في المدارس الفرنسية والفرنكوفونية، فضلا عن المسرح والسينما والتلفاز لاحقا. كتبت الرواية بطريقة المقاطع القصيرة الممسرحة غالبا والتي لا تخلو من التشويق دائما. شخصية «أصهب» هي شخصية الطفل الضحية، أو كبش المحرقة الذي يعاني الظلم من أقرب المقربين إليه. يعتبرونه غبيا فيستكين لأنه لا يريد أن يخيب ظنهم خوفا من ردود فعلهم، وصولا إلى آخر فصول الرواية التي يبدع فيها المؤلف مقدما لتمرد أصهب بفصل عنوانه «عاصفة الأوراق» يكون تمهيدا لكلمة «لا» التي ينطق بها أصهب أخيرا فتزلزل التراتبية العائلية وتكشف عن تواطؤ حميم بينه وبين أبيه، وعن درجة من المحبة، مغلفة بالقسوة، كانت تختفي وراء شخصية الأب العابسة والمسافرة دائما.
