قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم \" الإيمان بضع وسبعون شعبة \" أي : فرعا وقسما وقد وضع الإمام البيهقي كتابه هذا بترتيب شيق فقد قسم شعب الإيمان إلى سبع وسبعين شعبة أولها \" لا إله إلا الله \" فيذكر تحت كل باب كثيرا من الأحاديث الواردة فيه والآثار ، وكثيرا ما يسند الآثار إلى قائليها من السلف، ويخرج الحديث فينسبه إلى كتب الحديث وقد يحكم عليه، وقد اقتصر كما ذكر في المقدمة على ما لا يغلب على القلب كونه كذبا موضوعا. كما يورد فيه بعض القصص والحكايات المحفزة للخير المنفرة من الشر.
