هذا الكتاب هو ترجمة لكتاب حرب في الصحراء (War in Desert) للسيد جون باجوت غلوب باشا، الذي صدر عام 1960، وقد ارتأينا تغيير عنوانه ليكون أكثر مطابقة في توضيح مضمونه ولكي لا يختلط الأمر في أول وهلة على القارئ ويتصور أن المقصود هو حرب الخليج الثانية. والكتاب هو تسجيل لتجربة، شخصية عاشها المؤلف في عشرينيات القرن المنصرم (القرن العشرين) مع القبائل العراقية في البادية الجنوبية وهي تتعرض لعمليات قتل وسلب على أيدى الإخوان (الوهابيين). ومن خلال تلك التجربة، يسلط الضوء على عادات وتقاليد وطبائع البدو ونمط تفكرهم، وكيف كانت تتصرف الحكومة العراقية والبريطانية في ذلك الوقت تجاههم.
