يعكس الخيال السوسيولوجي حالة الوعي بالعلاقة بين التجربة الخاصة للموضوع أو المشكلة المراد دراستها من ناحية، وبين المجتمع الأوسع والتغير الاجتماعي والتاريخي المحيط بها من الناحية الأخرى وبالتالي يمكن تحويل المشكلات أو الموضوعات الشخصية إلى قضايا عامة ويعتمد الخيال السوسيولوجي مبدأ السببية الاجتماعية، إذ يفترض أن الحقيقة الاجتماعية تمثل توليفة من البيوغرافي والتاريخ والاجتماع والاقتصاد والسياسة والثقافة وتقاطعاتها كأنساق مستقلة تارة، ومتشابكة تارة أخرى في داخل البناء الاجتماعي العام.
