ينقسم هذا الكتاب إلي ثلاثة فصول كان الفصل الأول عن (ماهية العلل) وفيه بيان عن معرفة العلل وأسبابها وطرق الكشف عنها ثم أهميتها ومناطها وأثرها في اختلاف الفقهاء أما الفصل الثاني فقد حمل عنوان (أنواع العلل واقسامها) بمبحثين بحث الأول منهما علل الإسناد وتناول الثاني علل المتن مقسما إياهما إلى فقر متعددة، ويأتي الفصل الثالث والأخير في تطبيقات هذا العلم على كتاب التهذيب للشيخ الطوسي.
