فهو كتاب تتضمن أخبار جغرافية واجتماعية وسياسية وعسكرية وأدبية لا يستغني عنها أي دارس للجزائر خلال القرنين الماضيين. وبالإضافة إلى ذلك، فإن محمد الكبير، الذي كان سبباً في تأليف الكتاب، كان شخصية جديرة بتسليط الأضواء، فهو حاكم جزائري تقلب في مناصب مختلفة وشهد تطورات كثيرة وساهم بقسط وفير في خلق تلك المناصب وتوجيه تلك التطورات، شغل منصب (باي) واشترك في الحرب ضد الإسبان وقاد بنفسه حملة ضد الصحراء لإخضاع أهلها إلى سلطة الـ (داي)، كما عرف عنه أنه شجع.
