الرحلة التي يرويها هذا الكتاب ليست برحلة عادية كما أن صاحبها محمد علي باشا لم يكن رحالة عاديا ولم يكن رحالة مولعا بالسفر والسياحة وحسب بل كان مثقفا عربيا يحمل هموم أمته في قلق وأول ما يلفت النظر في هذه الرحلة أن كاتبها كان فارسا مولعا بالجياد العربية الأصيلة وخبير بتمييز جيدها من عاديها ووراء رحلته هذه إلى الشام رغبة عارمة في العثور على جياد أصيلة وصفها له أصدقاء وحدثوا عن وجودها هناك من هنا ربما يتكشف لنا مدى حرصه على الإعلاء من شأن هذا الرمز الجواد الذي ارتبط وجوده شعرا وفروسية وأخبارا بأزهى ما في قصص الحضارة العربية الإسلامية منذ جياد الفتح الأولى وحتى جواد الملك الناصر صلاح الدين محرر بلاد الشام من الفرنجة.
