يتناول هذا الكتاب دراسة الحياة الفكرية في الثغور والعواصم حتى القرن الخامس للهجرة حيث تناول الحياة الفكرية في الثغور والعواصم منذ نشأتها الأولى عام (84هـ/703) حتى القرن الخامس للهجرة (الحادي عشر للميلاد) واعتمدت المؤلفة في دراستها المنهج التاريخي القائم على البحث والتقصي وربط الأحداث التاريخية ومناقشتها وتحليلها واستنباط النتائج منها ومن الصعوبات التي واجهتها المؤلفة وتناولت ميادين الحياة الفكرية وهي العلوم الدينية (كعلم القراءات والتفسير والحديث والسنة والوضع في الحديث وعلم الفقه والقضاء) والعلوم اللسانية (العلوم اللغوية والاجتماعية) والعلوم العقلية الصرفة كالطب والفلك والرياضيات والحساب والفلسفة.
