يلقي هذا الكتاب الضوء على موضوع الجيش في المهدية في الفترة من العام 1881م الذي يمثل بداية الصدام العسكري بين المهدية والعثمانيون في السودان وحتى عام 1899م الذي يؤرخ لنهاية آخر المواجهات العسكرية للمهدية والذي تعرضت فيه المهدية للهزيمة على يد القوات البريطانية المصرية الغازية فزالت على أثرها الدولة السودانية وخضعت للاستعمار البريطاني تحت غطاء الحكم الثنائي.
