يسلط هذا الكتاب الضوء على حقبة تاريخية تكشف النقاب عم وصف لمعالم مدينة بغداد في الفترة بين القرنين السابع عشر والعشرين وهي عبارة عن مذكرات لعدد من الرحالة الفرنسيين دونت في أربعة مؤلفات وصدرت في تواريخ متفرقة في فرنسا قبل أكثر من قرن من الزمان باللغة الفرنسية وبقيت راقدة تحت غبار الزمن يكتنفها التجاهل والنسيان وقمنا بترجمة ما يتعلق منها بمدينة بغداد مع التعليق على بعض ما ورد في نصوصها وقد تكشف هذه المذكرات التاريخية بعض الوقائع عن تاريخ هذه المدينة العريقة والتي ربما لم يتطرق إليها المؤرخون ولم تتناولها كتب التاريخ التي صدرت حتى يومنا هذا.
