هذا الكتاب يعبر عن وجهة النظر البراجماتية على الرغم من أن مؤلفه وهو إمام البراجماتية قد تجنب ذكر هذه الكلمة عمدأ خشية أن تكون مدارا لسوء الفهم. ويمضي فيقول في مقدمته إن كتابه براجماتي من أوله إلى اخره إذا نظرنا إلى البراجماتية نظرة تؤولها تأويلا سليما بمعنى أن تستخدم النتائج على انها إختبارات لابد منها للدلالة على صدق القضايا، بشرط أن تتناول هذه النتائج من حيث هى عمليات يمكن إجراؤها، ومن حيث هى وسائل تؤدي إلى حل المشكلة الخاصة التي قد إستدعت تلك الإجراءات فالكتاب يعرض لوجهة نظرفى المنطق تلائم العلم المعاصر، يعبر بها عن رأي البراجماتيين الذين هم من ألصق الجماعات الفلسفية المعاصرة بتيار العلم. وقد أطلق صاحب هذا الكتاب على منطقه الجديد اسم \"نظرية البحث\" ليعارض بها سائر النظريات المنطقية قديمها وحديثها على السواء.
