يتناول الكتاب سرد دقيق لدور الألمان في الحروب الصليبية في منطقة بلاد الشام. فالحرب الأهلية التي نشبت في ألمانيا بين الإمبراطور هنري الرابع في تكوين حكومة مركزية وحكم ثيوقراطي قوى في ألمانيا في حين أن الدوقات الألمان تمسكو بعدم الخضوع لاية حكومة مركزية في ألمانيا، وتمسكوا بالانفراد بتصريف شئونهم الداخلية في دوقياتهم، وتطلعوا أن تكون العلاقة بينهم وبين الإمبراطور الألماني علاقة شبه فيدرالية فقط.
