تدور أحداث الرواية في غاليسيا في نهاية القرن التاسع عشر. يبدأ الأمر بوصول دون خوليان وهو كاهن شاب سيكون، من الآن فصاعدا، مكلفا بديار أولوا ومربيا لبيروتشو، الصبي الريفي وغير المتحضر الذي لا يرافق سوى الحيوانات. كما وجد دون بيدرو، ماركيز أولوا، رجلا ذو ذوق منحط. يحاول الكاهن الشاب، ممارسة كهنوته مع الناس الذين يعيشون في بيوت الماركيز، معتبرا كل ذلك بمثابة اختبارات يضعها الله في طريقه لإثبات قوة إيمانه.
