إن الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا يرصد بدقة مشكلات علم الكلام كما يرصد بدقة آراء بعض الفرق والمدارس الكلامية وقد كان المؤلف حريصا على أن يوقف القارئ على أوجه الاتفاق والاختلاف بين زعماء المعتزلة أنفسهم ولهذا كثيرا ما كان يعود بالقارئ إلى بداية الاعتزال صاعدا إلى مدرستي البصرة وبغداد ولم يغب عن المؤلف نقد بعض الديانات سواء الوضعي منها أو السماوي.
