يتحدث الكتاب عن \"فن السعادة ومتعة الحياة\" ولقد فتش الفلاسفه الإغريق عن مفهوم السعادة بعد أن بذلوا جهدهم في ترسيخ مجتمع مدني واعتبرت السعادة منذ تلك الفترة \"الخير الأسمى\" وقد رأى أرسطو أن السعادة تتمثل في فعل عقلي يحدث في التأمل كنشاط عقلي خلاق مع الفضيلة وأما أفلاطون فقد رأى أن \"ليس الخير وليست السعادة في اللذة وحدها أو في العلم وحده\" وأما الرواقيون فقد رأوا \"أن الغرض من الحياة هو تحقيق سعادة الفرد ومفهوم السعادة لديهم لا يتمثل في إشباع الرغبات المطلقة وإنما في كبت الانفعالات العاطفية وإخضاع الرغبات غير الأخلاقية لحكم العقل وحدود انتماء الفرد عندهم تشمل حدود العالم كله وليست في مدينة أثينا فقط والسعادة عند الرواقيين ليست فردية بل هي جماعية.
