تعتبر من أجمل الفنانات في تاريخ السينما المصرية، فكانت تحاكي معايير الذوق الغربي في أواسط القرن العشرين خاصة أنها اختيرت من قبل مجلة أمريكية في أربعينيات القرن العشرين كإحدى أجمل حسناوات عصرها لم تكن الفتاة التي ولدت في تركيا تعلم أنها على موعد مع النجومية في مصر، فوالدتها كانت حفيدة قيصر لي باشا أحد قادة الجيش التركي إبان حكم سلاطين آل عثمان، أما والدها فكان يعمل تاجر.
