ألفت \"المس بيل\" هذا الكتاب عن رحلتها الثانية إلى \"سوريا\" عام 1905، وقد صدرت طبعته الإنكليزية الأولى عام 1907 \"والمقصود هنا سوريا الكبرى في التسمية القديمة أي بلاد الشام : سوريا والأردن وفلسطين ولبنان\" لكن أغلب الفصول تدور في سوريا الحالية، حيث خصصت خمسة فصول لكل من فلسطين والأردن، وأفردت فصلا لبعلبك الهرمل بينما ركزت بقية الفصول الأربعة عشر على سوريا ومدنها.
