يعرض هذا الكتاب، من خلال الربط بين منعطـفين بارزين في تاريخ إيران المعاصر وهما الثورة الدستورية في بدايات القرن والثورة الدينية في بداية الربع الأخير منه، للتحولات الاجتماعية الكبرى التي شهدتها دولة إيران الحديثة، مسلطا الضوء على الثورة الدستورية 1906 وما خصت عنه من ممارسة فعلية للمعارضة السياسية ضد القهر السياسي للأسرة القاجارية، ومحاولات بناء دولة مدنية حديثة خلال فترة حكم الأسرة البهلوية، والصراع الدولي حول إيران إبان الحرب العالمية الثانية، والصراع السياسي الداخلي بين محمد رضا بهلوي وقوى المعارضة منذ ثورة مصدق حتى قيام الثورة الدينية وقد احتلت الثورة الدينية 1979 موقعا بارزا في هذه الدراسة باعتبارها الحدث السياسي الأهم في العالم الإسلامي خلال النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين.
