أدت القصة التاريخية دورا هاما في تاريخ الأدب، لأنها كانت تعبر عن أحداث ارتبطت بتراث الشعب وأمجاده، فاختزلت الموروث الثقافي للأمم وأصبحت الملاذ الذي يلجأ إليه كلما عصفت بهذه الأمم عواصف تحاول تغيير مسار تاريخها عن وجهته الصحيحة. هكذا كانت القصة التاريخية عند العرب، خاصة تلك القصة التي لامست شغاف قلوب الشعب، وأعادت له أخبار أبطاله وأمجاد فوارسه، وتلاحم جيشه مع الجيوش الأجنبية في فترات متفاوتة من الزمن. فالقصة الشعبية التاريخية تهدف إلى استعادة الأمجاد وتذكر بالأيام الخالدة، وتحث الشعب على المقاومة، مقاومة الظلم والاستبداد والقهر، عندما تدور حول سيرة بطل من الأبطال، فتسجل انتصاراته على الأعداء، وقهره لجيوش البغي والعدوان، وكأنه بطل أسطوري، أرسله الله لإنقاذ شعبه.
