يضم الكتاب حوار الفقهاء والمؤرخين من مختلف الفرق والمذاهب حول تاريخ القرآن الكريم منذ جمعه وتكوينه وحتى ترقيمه وتنقيطه والاختلاف في عدد سوره وآياته وحيرة المفسرين بمعاني حروف التهجي التي تقدمت عددا من سوره، حيث يبدأ بأسماء القران التشريفية بكراماته وسوره وآياته وحروفه بعد العروج على مجمل تاريخ التنزيل ثم يتناول مقالة خلق القرآن التي شاعت أيام الخليفة عبد الله المأمون محاورا شخوصها ومحنتها ثم مصيرها ومصير القائلين بها بعد عصر ازدهارها أيام ثلاثة من الخلفاء ثم خفوتها أيام المتوكل ثم يختتم بتقديم تحقيق لكتاب الجاحظ المخطوط (خلق القرآن) كان ابن حجر شاهدا على تفاصيل المحنة دونها في كتابه إلى جانب عرض تصورات أصحابه وموقف الجميع من محنة الفقهاء الممتحنين.
