في منتصف القرن العشرين ترك غابريل غارسيا ماركيز كولومبيا وذهب إلى إيطاليا لتعلم السيناريو في المركز التجريبي للسينما في روما؛ هناك درس السيناريو قبل أن ينشر الرواية.. ينتقد مدارس تعليم السيناريو التي فيها دكاترة يحاضرون بفخامة عن التاريخ الاجتماعي الاقتصادي للسينما، وعن نظرية اللغة الفيلمية. وكان الطلاب يبقون جامدين تترنح رؤوسهم من النعاس، والسبب حسب ماركيز أن ذلك لم يكن سيناريو ولا أي شيء، بل كان محاضرات مطولة مضيعة للوقت... وبعد سنوات من نقد تلك الدروس قدم ماركيز بديله عمليا، وهو عبارة عن ورشات سيناريو نشرت في ثلاثة كتب، هي كيف تحكى الحكاية و نزوة القص المباركة وبائعة الأحلام.
