Overview
تبدأ القصة مع الراوي يتجول في شوارع سانت بطرسبرغ. يتأمل كيف أنه كان دائما شخصا مثيرا للضحك، وأيضا، في الآونة الأخيرة، أدرك حقيقة أنه غير مهتم بأي شيء في هذه الحياة. هذا هو الوحي الذي أدى به إلى فكرة الانتحار. راوي القصة يكشف أنه أشترى مسدسا الأشهر الماضية بهدف إطلاق النار على رأسه. على الرغم من أنها ليلة كئيبة، والراوي ينضر إلى السماء ويرى نجمة انفرادية. بعد فترة وجيزة من رؤية النجمة، فتاة صغيرة تأتي نحوه وهي تجري. الراوي ظن أن هناك شيئا خاطئ مع والدة الفتاة. هز الفتاة بعيدا وذهب إلى شقته، هناك غط في نوم عميق، ووجد في حلمه العديد من الحقائق والعديد من المسائل خاصة تلك المتعلقة بالإنسان، خصوصا وأنه كان ينوي الانتحار والفرار من هذا العالَم الكئيب والمثيرة للشفقة على حد قوله.
