يتناول الكتاب حيث إن الردود النحوية من الموضوعات التي رافقت نشأة النحو في لحظات نموه الأولى، وكان لهذه الردود النحوية دور كبير في صياغة القاعدة النحوية ونشوء المذاهب النحوية المختلفة، وخاصة إذا ما أدركنا أن الرد النحوي الذي توجه به حماد بن سلمة لسيبويه، كما ورد في الرواية المشهورة، عندما قال سيبويه : \"ليس أبو الدرداء\" فصاح به حماد، لحنت يا سيبويه إنما هذا استثناء، فكان هذا الرد النحوي سببا في قراءة سيبويه النحو عندما قال : \"والله لأطلبن علما لا يلحنني معه أحد ثم مضى ولزم الخليل وغيره\".
