تطرح رواية «بيت من ورق» العلاقة بين الإبداع الروائي والواقع السياسي في الغرب ابتداء من أن مؤلفها مايكل دوبس عمل لسنوات في الحقل السياسي بطل رواية «بيت من ورق» هو فرانسيس إيوان أوركهارت كان رجلا متعدد المواهب فهو نائب في البرلمان وعضو في المجلس الملكي الخاص ووزير للتاج الملكي وقائد من الرتبة الفائقة الامتياز في الإمبراطورية البريطانية ولكنه لم يكتف بكل هذا المجد كانت عينه على رئاسة الوزراء عمل مراقبا للحزب فوضع يده على كل الأسرار في عالم السياسة فبدا أن يخونها كلها لكي يصبح رئيسا للوزراء وفي أقل من شهرين فقط استخدم روجر أونيل ثم تخلص منه ونصب مستعدا أفخاخا للأخوين كولينغردج وارتكب جرائم قتل دموية وخاض معركة انتخابية مع خصوم تنبأت كبريات الصحف البريطانية والعالمية خسارتهم قبل بدء ساعة الصفر.
