جاء في كتاب: \"قصة يوسف عليه السلام\" أن يوسف -عليه السلام- ابن يعقوب -عليه السلام- كان أحب أولاده إليه، وأعلاهم منزلة في قلبه، فأراد الله -تعالى- أن يبتلي صبره بفراق ولده مدة طويلة من الزمن. كان إخوة يوسف الاثنا عشر يشعرون بالغيرة من أخيهم، ويرون أنه قد شغل قلب أباهم عنهم، فأرادوا أن يتخلصوا منه؛ حتى يصفى لهم أبوهم، فدبروا لذلك مكيدة وحيلة، فأخذوا يوسف -عليه السلام- بحجة التنزه واللعب، ثم ألقوه في بئر عميقة، وأخذوا قميصه بعد أن لوثوه بدم كذب؛ حتى يقتنع والدهم بصدق روايتهم، وابيضت عيناه من الحزن على يوسف، وظل غيابه ما يقارب أربعين، أو ثمانين سنة، وقيل غير ذلك، وكان الأب يعقوب -عليه السلام- في كل هذه السنوات صابرا محتسبا، فلم يفقد الأمل بعودة ولده، ولم يقنط من رحمة الله تعالى.
