تدور أحداث القصة حول فيرا بافلوفنا، تلك الفتاة الروسية غير التقليدية، التي تهرب من بيت أسرتها بعد أن قرروا تزويجها، وذلك لتحقق استقلالها الذاتي في المجتمع وڤيرا شخصية طموحة ولكنها غير جشعة، شجاعة ولكنها غير طائشة، كما أن ذكاء باڤلوڤنا وصراحتها وثقافتها كانت السبب في ارتياد أمهر الفنانين والموسيقيين والطلبة، الذين كانوا يمثلون حينها الشباب التقدمي الروسي الذي يسعى إلى نشر الفكر الإشتراكي في مجتمعهم لمنزلها.
