الكتاب ألفه القاضي الفرنسي الكسيس دي توكفيل لدراسة الإصلاحات التي أدخلتها أمريكا على نظم السجون والإصلاحيات تمهيدا لإصلاح سجون فرنسا وقد منحت أكادمية العلوم اﻻجتماعية والسياسية في فرنسا أهم جوائزها لمؤلفه (دي توكفيل) وترجم الكتاب إلى كل اللغات الحية ويتناول الجزء الأول من الكتاب معالم أمريكا ونظام الحكم في ولاياتها، وأجناسها الثلاثة (البيض والزنوج والهنود الحمر) وعلاقتاتهم بعضهم ببعض ونظام الحكم المحلي في القري والمدن أما الجزء الثاني فيتناول دراسة النواحي اﻻجتماعية واﻻقتصادية والأدبية.
