تناقش رواية \"ضوء القمر\" زواج البنات الصغيرات، كتقليد لا يزال معمولا به في القرى الهندية، حيث تنسلخ (نسيمة) من طفولتها لتصبح زوجة وهي لم تزل تدرج في مرابع طفولتها، تلاحق اليعاسيب بين حقول الأرز والمستنقعات والشواطيء، انتزعوها مثل نبتة لتعيش في مكان آخر، لكنها أصرت على التمسك بطفولتها من خلال أحلام اليقظة، حيث ترحل إلى هناك كل يوم وتنسى أنها (امرأة) متزوجة ولم يستطع زوجها أن يخلصها من هذا الشرود الذي ظل عادة ملازمة لها جعلت حياتها الزوجية على كف عفريت لولا أم زوجها التي عاملتها بلطف وحين تموت الأم لم تجد نسيمة بدا من أن تدير البيت كأية امرأة ناضجة وعليها أن تغادر شخصية الطفلة.
