كان كارل فريدريك غاوس (Carl Friedrich Gauss) أحد آخر من أحاطوا بالمعرفة الشاملة لعلوم الرياضيات ويمكن القول بأنه كان من أعظم علماء الرياضيات الذين شهدهم العالم، تلك المكانة التي احتلها أيضا علماء آخرون مثل أرخميدس وإسحاق نيوتن وليونارد أولر، ومن أعماله البارزة التي نشرت هي التحقيقات الحسابية (Disquisitiones Arithmeticae) التي كتبها وهو لم يتجاوز 11 من عمره والتي تركزت أهميتها لنظرية الأرقام في ربطها لأهمية عناصر إقليدس بالهندسة وبالإضافة إلى الرياضيات، كان لدى غاوس إسهامات بارزة في العلوم المرتبطة بالفيزياء والرياضيات مثل علوم الفلك والبصريات والكهربائية والمغنطة والإحصاء بالإضافة إلى علوم المسح البياني.
