تدور أحداث الكتاب عن أن كانت في مملكة بعيدة في إثيوبيا أميرة جميلة تدعى عايدة وكانت المفضلة لدى أبيها الملك أمونسرو في ذلك الوقت كانت مملكة إثيوبيا تخوض حربا ضد المملكة المجاورة مصر وذلك للإستيلاء على الأراضي ومع اشتداد الحرب أمر الملك أمونسرو شعب إثيوبيا بعدم الإقتراب من الحدود حتى إبنته عايدة ولكن عايدة لم تحتمل الإحتجاز أكثر فاستغلت غياب الملك وغادرت القصر سرا مع خدمها وفي تلك الأثناء كان الجنود المصريون يقتربون من الحدود فوقعت أسيرة مكبلة بالأصفاد والسلاسل واقتيدت إلى مصر لتصبح أمة.
