يتناول الكتاب قصة عالم اللاهوت الألماني الفرنسي الدكتور \"ألبرت شفايتزر\"، إضافة لكونه طبيب وفيلسوف أيضا، ولد في فرنسا سنة 1875، ومنذ طفولته ذهب ألبرت إلى الخدمة في الكنيسة اللوثرية، وأحب بساطة طقوس هذا الفرع من المسيحية، ولما قرأ مقالا في الصحيفة عن حقيقة النقص الكارثي للأطباء في إفريقيا ترك العمل في الكلية، ودخل كلية الطب بجامعة ستراسبورغ، وفي عام 1911 تخرج من الكلية وهرع إلى طريقه الجديد، وفي عام 1913 غادر ألبرت شفايتزر إلى إفريقيا لتنظيم المستشفى، وفي عام 1959 استقر بشكل دائم في لامباريني وأسس مستشفى ألبرت شفايتزر غرب إفريقيا الوسطى، وهو مؤسس الفلسفة الأخلاقية العالمية والواقعية العالمية، وقد تحدى شفايتزر وجهة النظر العلمانية المسيحية، وحصل على جائزة نوبل للسلام عام 1952 لفلسفته (الإيمان بالحياة)، وتوفي في سنة 1965.
