Overview
\"The Oasis\" is the personal and historical account of Gertrude Dyck, a Canadian nurse who spent nearly forty years providing medical care in the city of Al Ain and the Buraimi Oasis. Known affectionately by the local population as \"Doctora Latifa,\" Dyck arrived in 1962 to join the Oasis Hospital (now Kanad Hospital), which was established at the invitation of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his brother Sheikh Shakhbut. The memoir serves as a primary source for the social and medical history of the United Arab Emirates during its pre-oil era and the subsequent rapid modernization of the late 20th century.
