في هذا الكتاب قام المؤلف الإمام ابن الجوزي بجمع ماهو متفرق في الكتب من آداب الحسن بن أبي الحسن البصري وزهده ومواعظه وأثبت ما انتهت القدرة إليه وقد رسم ماجمعه من ذلك على ثمانية فصول والفصل الأول في ذكر منشئه وصفة أحواله وأفعاله والفصل الثاني فيما روي عنه من الآداب ومكارم الأخلاق والفصل الثالث فيما أورده من الحكم والمواعظ مختصرا على جهة البلاغة والإيجاز والفصل الرابع في ذم الدنيا ونهيه عن التعلق بها والفصل الخامس فيما روي عنه عند تلاوة القرآن من الحكم المواعظ والفصل السادس فيما أورده على جهة الاستغفار والدعاء ونهي عن التصنع والرياء والفصل السابع في مكاتباته للخلفاء ومقاماته مع الأمراء والفصل الثامن فيمن روي عنه من المواعظ والحكم من سائر الأشياء.
