المسألة الشرقية هو عمل تاريخي بالأساس إلا أنه لا يخلو من غرض سياسي قصد به مصطفى كامل نصرة القضية المصرية عرف فيه المسألة الشرقية بأنها ذلك الصراع القائم بين دول أوروبا ودولة الخلافة العثمانية المترامية الأطراف ووجودها في قلب القارة العجوز، ولعل المتأمل يرى أن الغرض الأبرز من مناقشة مثل هذه القضية الكبيرة هو وضع حركة الاستقلال التي كان يقودها مصطفى كامل من أجل تحرير مصر في إطار محدد، من خلال التركيز على عداوة بريطانيا لمصر وللدولة العثمانية والعالم الإسلامي فالمسألة المصرية لم تكن إلا حلقة في ما أصبح يعرف في السياسة الدولية في القرن التاسع عشر بالمسألة الشرقية.
