في الجهل يقدم لنا ميلان كونديرا نصا قويا حول المنفى وإستحالة أي عودة حقيقية إلى البلد الذي غادرناه ويحكي لنا بأسلوب حميمي وأحيانا فظ إزاء شخصياته عن المنفى والإنسلاخ عن الجذور وبالنتيجة عن الحنين والعودة ووحشة العودة الموسومة بالخيبة الشخصيتان محور هذا الكتاب هما إيرينا وجوزيف اللذان تفاهما التاريخ بعيدا عن وطنهما ويقررأن العودة إلى بلدهما في إجازة قصيرة يجربان حالات لم الشمل لكن الأحداث لا تجري كما يتوقعان وتأتي المشاعر والأحاسيس المتناقضة لتشويه الصورة المعتادة عن العودة إلى البلد.
