يؤكد الانهيار الاقتصادي والمالي المثير في آسيا الفكرة القائلة بأننا نشهد نهاية \"الرأسمالية الآسيوية\"، وننتقل إلى عهد الأسواق الحرة على النطاق العالمي. ويعتقد العديد من الاقتصاديين الكلاسيكيين الجدد والعديد من العاملين في صندوق النقد الدولي أنه بسبب الأزمة التي تتمثل في التدخل الحكومي المفرط في آلية السوق، فإن علاج ذلك يتطلب إدخال تغييرات هيكلية لإزالة السياسات التي تحدث تشوهات في آلية السوق، أما معارضو هذا الطرح فيقولون بأن النظم الاقتصادية السليمة بصورة أساسية لم تتعرض للتفكك نتيجة لتحرير التشريعات السريع وغير المنضبط عن أسواق رأس المال.
