هذا الكتاب به يقول المؤلف قطعت وأنا أكتب هذه الكلمات من العمر خمسة وثمانين عاما وقارب عمري في ممارسة الأدب كتابة سبعين عاما إذا اعتبرت بدء هذه الممارسة أول قصة كتبتها ونشرتها وذلك في عام 1936 وهذان العمران الطويلان في الحياة وفي العمل الأدبي، يفسران بعض التفسير وفرة النتاج الذي يحمل اسمي والذي أحاول جمعه في ما يسمى بالأعمال الكاملة وأقول الأعمال الكاملة وأنا لا أدري منذ الآن كم سيكون مقدار انطباق تلك الصفة عليها إذ إن وفرة ما كتبته في العمرين الطويلين اللذين ذكرتهما أعلاه تتيح مجالا واسعا للتعرض للنقض ولن أنشر كل ما كتبته في هذا الصنف بين أعمالي الكاملة وإنما سأسعى إلى أن أثبت نماذج منها قد تعجب القراء وقد يهتم بها النقاد بصورة خاصة.
