هذه قصة أشباح نشرت في 1898 راوية القصة مربية شابة أرسلت إلى بيت في الريف يدعى بيت بلاي لكي تعتنى بطفلين يتيمين. لقد استأجرها عمهما وهو رجل وسيم تشعر بانجذاب إليه على أساس أن تتولى مسئولية الأطفال والبيت كاملة. وهناك تجد بيتا مبهجا مريحا ومدبرة بيت مريحة على حين تجد الطفلين جميلين وساحرين على نحو غير معهود لكنها سرعان ما تبدأ في الشعور بحضور شر حاد وترى شكل الوصيف والمربية والحق أنهما ماتا كليهما ويتناهى إليها أنه كان ثمة علاقة آثمة بينهما وفي حالة المربية الشابة فإن هذه الأطياف تبعث شرا مخيفا وتقنعها بأن الطفلين وإن أنكرا ذلك على اتصال بتلك الأطياف.
