يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن أن كان الشعراء ولم يكن الخليل وكان الشعر ولم تكن العروض وكان ميزانهم أذن تتقبل النغم وتستسيغه وجرى على الشعراء في الجاهلية وصدر الإسلام وعقودا من العصر الأموي ضابطهم فيها ما تقبله الأذن العربية مما يقال من الشعر فيرونه مقبولا أو مردودا ولم تكن كلمة (العروض) إلا بمعناها اللغوي فلم تكن علما من العلوم تؤلف فيه الكتب والمصنفات وكانت الزحافات والعلل مستساغة استساغة الشوارد من النحو قبل تدوينه فقد كانت العرب ترفع الفاعل وتنصب المفعول دون معرفة هذه المصطلحات النحوية قبل وضع علم النحو وإن كانت لكل قاعدة نحوية بمعناها شواذ فإن الزحافات والعلل في العروض تشبهها ويتقبلها الناس وتتقبلها الأذن العربية دون معرفة الزحاف ولا اسمه حتى جاء علم العروض مفصلا ليوضح كل شيء يطرأ على القصيدة الشعرية.
