هذا الكتاب هو الحلقة الثانية في سلسلة دراسة أحياء القاهرة بعد كتابه الأول الخاص بحي باب البحر، حيث أنه لما كان كتاب الخطط التوفيقية لعلي باشا مبارك قد مضى على صدوره أكثر من مائة عام، والذي وضعه بعدما رأى قدم العهد بخطط المقريزي، وتغيير كثير من المعالم، بل واختفاء بعضها لدرجة يصعب معها التحقق مما ورد في مؤلفه والتعرف على كثير من المعالم، فوضع كتابه الذي أوضح فيه بالتحقيق المواضع الواردة بخطط المقريزي وبيان حالتها وما آلت إليه العمائر- التي ذكرها- في عصره.
